JUNEAU, Fiji—Ara Civil Engineer is one of the most popular names in the world of civil engineering.
With the same name as the famous civil engineer of ancient Rome, ara is the Greek for “civil.”
This is a country that has been at the forefront of civil aviation, a country whose economy is built around the idea that a civil engineer should be an engineer, and a nation that is known for its love of science.
“People want to see that, they want to believe that,” says Ara’s chief executive, Tarek R. Amin.
“When we started out, we had no knowledge of engineering.”
In the 1990s, Rafi Hamada, then an assistant professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, took on a new challenge.
The university was studying how to build the world’s first nuclear power plant, so it wanted to understand how the engineering profession might evolve to meet its needs.
Ara was one of several companies that were interested in the company’s research, and the two teams decided to go to work together.
ARA had a team of engineers that was part of the university’s nuclear research and development group.
The company’s engineering director, John L. H. Lee, helped the team build an innovative nuclear design, which became the basis for ARA’s civil engineering program.
Araku’s Civil Engineering was born in the early 2000s, as Rafi and his team worked on the reactor.
“It was very exciting,” says Amin, who started the company in 2011.
“We were working on a lot of different issues at the same time.
We had to come up with a solution.”
It took years for the Arakus Civil Engineering team to develop a working design, but by 2013, the team had successfully tested the reactor, with the help of a Japanese nuclear reactor contractor.
The reactor was completed in 2016.
Amin says the company is now a top 10 company in the country, and has a contract with Japan’s government to build another nuclear reactor at Arakau.
“In the future, Arakulas Civil Engineering will be able to build a nuclear power reactor, which is something that is very, very important for the future of our nation,” Amin says.
“If the Japanese government continues to build nuclear power plants, it will be a huge challenge for Arakui.”
The project is one example of Arakua’s ambitious plans to be a leader in engineering.
Amin believes Arakutu has the ability to be the first civil engineering school to produce a nuclear reactor.
And it’s not the first to go nuclear.
In 2017, Ara launched a nuclear project at its research facility in Tonga, where it built a reactor that produces hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide.
“That was a good idea,” says Rafi.
“But we had a different plan.”
In 2016, ARA and the Japanese company Toshiba built a similar reactor at its Tonga facility, which was expected to be completed in 2019.
“This was something we really wanted to do,” says H.H. Lee.
“Ara is a company that has done something very, really ambitious in civil engineering.”
Amin says Arakuku will be the next reactor that will make a difference.
“The next generation of Ara will be building a nuclear-powered plant,” he says.
Amin, an engineer himself, says Arapu is committed to doing things differently, and is planning a different approach to nuclear engineering.
“I think that there are two big problems that Ara has.
One is that it is too big and too expensive, and I think that is why we need to take the big step forward,” Amin said.
“Another is that the industry is not ready.
We need to come to grips with the fact that this is something different.
We can do it and we will do it.”
In recent years, Araputu and Ara have become close partners.
Last year, the two companies agreed to merge, which would bring Arakūs operations to Tonga.
Amin sees the merger as a significant step toward bringing a new generation of engineers into the field.
“One of the reasons that I wanted to merge with Arakuto is because we have a shared interest in the future,” Amin adds.
“So I think we can do a lot for the field.”
As Arakuhan prepares for its first nuclear reactor, Amin says that the company needs to do things differently in order to reach its goals.
“There is still a lot to do, but the future is bright,” he said.
Amin has been working on the Ara project for years.
The project started in the 1990-2000s, when he was a research assistant professor in the University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
