More than a year after the federal government announced the Civil Engineering Program, the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development (DIRD) is preparing to introduce a new $20 million civil engineering fund that will pay for the development of innovative projects.
Civil engineering projects, often for construction, environmental remediation or transport infrastructure, are among the most contentious issues in federal infrastructure spending.
The government has committed to spend $200 million over five years to establish a Civil Engineering Fund to assist communities across Australia with civil engineering needs.
The fund is being funded through an existing infrastructure fund and has been earmarked for the areas of regional infrastructure development that will take place under the new civil engineer program.
It will provide an additional $50 million for local infrastructure projects, including major infrastructure projects like roads and bridges.
“This is about the way we think about infrastructure,” said DIRD chief executive officer Mark Smith.
“We’ve got the infrastructure we’ve got.
The government announced it was committing to a $2 billion infrastructure program in 2017.”
I think that’s the key for our national infrastructure.”
The government announced it was committing to a $2 billion infrastructure program in 2017.
But, Mr Smith said the civil engineering initiative was about getting the country’s infrastructure built up.
“Our infrastructure is really good, we’re good at delivering it, and we need to be really good at doing it,” he said.
Mr Smith said DIST was committed to making sure that the civil engineer fund provided an investment opportunity for regional infrastructure projects.””
So we’re trying to do the same thing here.”
Mr Smith said DIST was committed to making sure that the civil engineer fund provided an investment opportunity for regional infrastructure projects.
“If you look at the infrastructure projects that we are investing in, we think they’re very well targeted, and they’re actually delivering value to the communities,” he told the ABC.
“The idea of a civil engineer is that you get involved with infrastructure and you look after that infrastructure.”
He said the fund would be used for a range of projects, from road projects to rail and water infrastructure projects to port and port facilities.
“It’s not just for the money, it’s for the vision and the vision for the project,” he explained.
“So that’s a really important component of the funding, that we’re making sure it’s focused on the vision, the vision is really important.”
What’s in the new fund?
The Civil Engineering program is a multi-year funding mechanism for federal infrastructure projects with a focus on regional infrastructure.
The DIRG fund will be administered by the Regional Infrastructure Management Agency (RIMA) and will initially support projects in the following areas: roads and highways; rail, ports and waterways; water and wastewater infrastructure; port facilities; and ports and water treatment systems.
The Civil Engineer Fund will be used to support a range for the following projects: water infrastructure; rail infrastructure; ports and waters; port and wastewater facilities; port infrastructure; and port and water processing systems.
It has been previously announced that the $20m civil engineering project would fund a range, including the development and management of a new rail network, the upgrade of ports and the construction of a rail bridge over the Yarra River.
“What we want to see is a lot more regional connectivity, more connectivity to our economy,” said Mr Smith.
“And so we’re looking at a number of different opportunities to support that.”
