Palestinian civil engineers who helped the militant group Hamas advance in Gaza have been arrested in Israel, Israel’s Channel 2 news reported Sunday.
Civil engineers who have helped the group advance in the Gaza Strip, where Israel and Egypt have been at odds for more than two years, have been detained, Channel 2 reported.
They include an Egyptian and an Israeli national, the news channel reported, citing a senior security official in the Israeli government.
“The government has taken the necessary measures to ensure the security of its citizens and to prevent the unauthorized entry of those involved in the movement of materials into the Gaza strip,” the official told Channel 2.
“We will take the necessary steps to prevent this from happening again,” the security official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Hamas and other Islamist groups have seized large swathes of the Gaza enclave in recent months, attacking hospitals and schools in what the Israel military has described as an assault on civilian infrastructure.
Israel and Gaza’s internationally recognized rulers have blamed each other for the violence.
